The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for the technical operations of productions at Music Theater Works including all scenic and paint construction, installation, and maintenance. The TD reports to the Production Manager. An ideal candidate communicates clearly and efficiently, manages multiple productions and events in different phases of completion, and can successfully lead employees to complete their tasks efficiently and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

●       The primary responsibilities are to:

○      Create technical drafting based on designs provided by the Scenic Designer to be used for bidding out scenic builds.

○      Work with all departments of the show to facilitate purchases or rentals from outside vendors.

○      Once all drafts are ready, review all department draftings and flag if items are being assigned the same location without consideration.

○      Coordinate and supervise load-in of the show.

○      Be available to address repair notes or technical issues during the run of the show.

●       Attend all preproduction, production, and tech meetings.

●       Ensure that scenic build follows all local and national safety standards; rigging, FR, etc.

●       Oversee all technical aspects of MTW’s productions with a primary focus on quality of building, painting, pre-prep package for budgeting, on site installing and striking supervision scenic elements.

●       Advise Production Manager on the technical specifications, construction costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual projects and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs

●       Create and distribute build drawings to scenic staff for all constructed elements

●       Supervise and assist with scenic construction to insure support of the artistic vision within the limitations of schedule, labor, and budget

●       Determine the necessary technical support in collaboration with other production departments, including lighting, sound, stage management, and all special needs necessary for productions in advance of production dates and during load in

●       Attend meetings and rehearsals as needed, to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting successful productions

●       Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

●       Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.

●       5 years of Technical Direction experience in professional theatrical organizations.

●       Experience forming and managing relationships with visiting artists, staff, and overhire crew.

●       Advanced knowledge of theatrical rigging and double purchase fly system.

●       Advanced knowledge of ACAD or Vectorworks.

●       Excellent time management, organization, and administrative skills.

●       Proficiency in Google Suite.

●       Satisfactory driving record and valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

●       Master’s Degree in Technical Direction or equivalent work experience.

●       5 years of Technical Direction experience working on large scale musicals.

●       Welding and Structural Engineering experience.

●       OSHA 10 or 30

Physical Demands:

●       Able to lift at least 50 pounds.

●       Able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing ladders.

●       Ability to work from heights (grids, catwalks, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts).

●       Workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing.
