About Avalanche Theatre
Avalanche Theatre champions the creation and development of new plays by Chicago playwrights through a collaborative, hands-on process rooted in curiosity, intention, and community. Our programs provide welcoming spaces where writers and theatre-makers can take risks, receive meaningful feedback, and refine their work through conversation and performance.

Position Overview
The Artist Advocate serves as a vital bridge between Avalanche Theatre’s leadership and its artists, ensuring that all company, ensemble, and guest artists feel supported, heard, and empowered throughout their creative process. This person will champion the well-being of artists, foster open communication, and help maintain a culture of kindness, inclusion, and respect across all Avalanche projects.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a confidential and trusted point of contact for artists to discuss concerns, needs, or feedback related to their work with Avalanche.
  • Attend company meetings and serve as a liaison between artists and leadership.
  • Collaborate with directors, producers, and staff to ensure rehearsal and performance environments are inclusive, safe, and supportive.
  • Support the implementation of Avalanche’s values, including our Decency and Kindness clause.
  • Help identify resources for artists, such as professional development opportunities, wellness supports, or community connections.
  • Participate in discussions about equity, accessibility, and representation in Avalanche programming.
  • Contribute to creating and updating company policies that reflect our values

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience working in theatre or the performing arts (as an artist, stage manager, educator, or administrator).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; empathetic listener and problem-solver.
  • Understanding of equity, inclusion, and anti-harassment principles in artistic spaces.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to Avalanche Theatre’s mission and values.

Time Commitment
Approximately 4–10 hours per month, including monthly company meetings and check-ins as needed.

Compensation
This is currently a volunteer position with the possibility of a stipend based on grant or donor funding.
