Under the direction of the Cultural Arts Manager, the Technical Director is responsible for the oversight and operation of all technical theatre equipment, programming in preparation for performances and productions, and direct supervision of Tech I & II staff. The Technical Director will work directly with performers and groups in the coordination of their scenic, sound and light needs. Responsibilities include the administration and coordination of the artistic and technical elements as theatre production manager.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
Reports directly to the Cultural Arts Manager and indirectly to the Superintendent of Recreation Programming. Supervises Tech I and Tech II part-time staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Oversee the day-to-day technical theatre operations of Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center and Fred P. Hall Amphitheater and ensure all aspects of production work safely and smoothly.
2. Serve as the lead technical liaison and supervisor for performances and events, coordinating with internal and external partners to plan, program, operate, and troubleshoot lighting, sound, and other production systems; oversee technical staff and provide on-site technical support for events across District venues.
3. Serve as the lead designer for Palatine Park District performing arts productions, including but not limited to the design and construction of scenic, rigging, light, A/V, and sound elements.
4. Purchase scenic, light, and sound equipment following District policies and procedures. Ensure purchases are cost-effective and meet the needs of the production. Order supplies for areas of oversight; manage and track inventory.
5. Maintain and update standard operating procedures/manuals for area of oversight.
6. Operate and maintain Park District Equipment in a safe manner as intended. Equipment includes but is not limited to: hand tools, ladders, light rails, scenic hoists, sound equipment, light equipment, set pieces, and hydraulic lifts.
7. Program sound equipment, lighting equipment, and other technical systems in advance of performances and productions; troubleshoot and resolve problems with production equipment.
8. Coordinate the repair and replacement of Theatre production equipment, including lighting and sound equipment, special effects equipment, computers, and related equipment and electronics.
9. Conduct monthly equipment and safety inspections for assigned facilities. This includes lighting, sound and rigging. Responsible for coordination of repair and replacement plan of technical theater equipment.
10. Management of direct reports, including hiring, training, supervision, discipline, motivation, and evaluation.
11. Manage timecards, payroll, and employee records in conjunction with Human Resources and enforce HR policies.
12. Responsible for creating budget and required reports and documentation. Accurate tracking of expenses, revenues, and purchases in accordance with polices and procedures.
13. Follow and promote all safety, personnel and operating policies and procedures
14. Prepare staff schedules for Cutting Hall and Amphitheater.
15. Maintain supplies and equipment, report items in disrepair, submit service calls as needed.
16. Work with various departments to efficiently schedule programming and event needs.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Fulfill the Park Districts mission and vision by acting in the best interests of the Palatine Park District, fellow employees and patrons.
2. Maintain a variety of files and records; enter and retrieve information from a computer.
3. Display a flexible attitude to the work and undertake varying roles, as dictated by venue activity and technical theatre requirements.
4. Efficiently and diplomatically respond to public inquiries, complaints or compliments in a timely manner.
5. Participate as a team member of the District to provide and improve services to the community, as well as providing excellent internal and external customer service.
6. Complete required reports, develop annual work plan goal and present as needed for areas of responsibility.
7. Participate in internal and external committees, task forces, meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
8. Attend required special events, regularly scheduled meetings and Park Board of Commissioner meetings as requested.
9. Work cooperatively with Communications and Marketing to produce copy for seasonal guides, website updates, social media and other marketing efforts.
10. Maintain a neat and orderly work environment.
11. Regular and punctual attendance.
12. May be required to respond to emergencies.
13. Participate with the Department as a team member to assist and improve the overall services to the community.
14. Be familiar with established District policies and procedures and conduct self in accordance with same.
15. Work in a positive and professional manner.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
• Equivalent to the completion of an associate degree with major coursework in Technical Theatre, Audio Engineering, Scenic Design, Lighting Design, or related field supplemented by coursework or training in Theatre operations/management, performing arts, or a related field.
• Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Audio Engineering, or related field is preferred.
• Two years of experience in a lead position performing technical operations in a performing arts facility.
• Four (4) to Six (6) minimum years’ experience in related field preferred.
• Valid State of Illinois Class “D” driver’s license.
• Attain (within six (6) months of employment) and maintain valid Adult & Child CPR/AED certification.
• OSHA 30 and ETCP Theatrical Rigging certification is preferred or attainment within the first 18 months as part of employment.
• Experience directly supervising part-time employees is strongly preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
• The ability to pass a drug screen, pre-employment physical and background check within the Illinois Park District code requirements.
• High level understanding and demonstrated ability to evaluate products in theatre lighting, sound, and electrical operations.
• Knowledge and ability to implement principles and practices of theatre sound engineering and lighting. Strong working knowledge of digital consoles. (Yamaha CL-5, M7CL-48, and ETC GIO)
• Ability to use and train staff on usage of equipment such as power tools, high height ladders, and power man lift.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of theatre stage rigging, set and scenery design and construction, and basic stage carpentry and working experience of scenic fit ups.
• Methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage productions.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office.
• Proficient, working knowledge of AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and QLab strongly preferred.
• The ability to read theatrical drawings and renderings, as well as developing from scratch.
• Working knowledge of software systems for Theatrical sound and lighting operation, as well as the theatrical production process.
• Ability to self-direct, multi-task, troubleshoot, problem solve, follow directions, meet deadlines and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
• Ability to resolve differences and situations that arise with patrons and work together with other Park District employees.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Schedule and manage time effectively, ability to work independently with initiative. Approach duties and lines of responsibility with enthusiasm.
• The ability to lead a team in a production situation.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
HOURS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS (includes Physical Demands)
• General forty (40) hours per week, days determined by performance schedule.
• Additional hours may be required to meet deadlines or for District events.
• Due to the nature of this position, evening and weekend hours are required.
• Flexing scheduled hours is required to ensure a Managerial presence.
• Employee is on duty whenever the need exists.
• General work area is an indoor, smoke-free environment with controlled temperatures and LED/fluorescent lighting and dark spaces with frequent exposure to natural and potentially hazardous weather conditions when outdoors.
• Work includes exposure to light and noise distractions from employees or equipment operation in adjacent work areas. Also, may have infrequent exposure to cleaning materials and office supplies.
• May have limited exposure to infectious disease if required to perform routine first aid or
emergency procedures.
• Prolonged periods of standing and traversing various environments.
• Working at heights on ladder and lifts.
• Works with hand and power tools and electronic equipment.

• May potentially walk on all types of uneven surfaces including, but not limited to, mud, snow, and ice.

The hiring range for this position is $60,000-$68,000
