Who we are:
We are Theatre Arcana, a brand new company in Chicago, and we are making new play development the backbone of our producing season. We are a thirteen member strong ensemble made up of theatre professionals from many backgrounds. Among our number we have alumni of playwriting competitions and new playfests across the nation.

What is the New Pages Series:
The New Pages Series is our premier play development series. We choose up to 4 submissions each year to bring into our 5-week development gauntlet. We start with consultation, then work your script with a director and a group of actors to prepare for a public reading with a Liz Lerman style feedback session. After another week of working with the director and actors, we will make an audio recording of the play to produce on our podcast.
It is from the New Pages selections that we hope to choose the new play to be premiered in our upcoming season.
Playwrights selected for New Pages will be notified in April.
If selected you’ll receive:
-A $100 prize
-The opportunity to develop your play with our actors and directors
-A public reading
-Your play published on our podcast (non-exclusive agreement)
-Your play published in our annual collection of developed plays and a share of book sales (non-exclusive agreement)
-Consideration for a premiere production
What we are looking for:
We are looking for unpublished and unproduced full length plays ready for development.
If you have a draft of your play that you feel is ready for development, we want to read it!
Our process for selection:
We have a multi-round process where our team of readers will assess the qualities of each submission and pass the most successful plays onto the next round. In the early rounds, we are searching for evidence of craft and artistry. In later rounds, we assign a score to each play based on a rubric of criteria. The highest scoring plays will make it into the final round, where the committee will discuss which remaining submissions will be selected.
Rules and guidelines for submission:
-You may only submit 1 play per year
-We are not accepting musicals this year, but may in the future
-The playwright must be a Chicago local or have access to housing and transportation to and around Chicago during the workshop
-Submissions may not have been published, produced, or received awards in other competitions. A staged reading or a workshop is acceptable as long as it has not been premiered or published.
-We are looking for full length plays. Your submission should have an expected run length of at least 70 minutes or more.
-We will not accept submissions written in full or in part by AI.
-All submissions must be “Blind.” That is, the PDF uploaded must not have any author identifying information anywhere on the script. We want to read for the merits of your script, not who you are.
-Must be PDF format.
-There is no submission fee.
-Submissions open Jan 12 and close Feb 28, or until we reach 200 submissions.
