Chicago Opera Theatre (COT) seeks experienced Assistant Directors for two productions in our 2026/27 season:
The Importance of Being Earnest
Rehearsals begin November 2, 2026
Final performance December 6, 2026
The Juniper Tree
Rehearsals begin April 19, 2027
Final performance May 23, 2027
Both productions will be presented at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.
The Importance of Being Earnest will be produced without chorus, while The Juniper Tree will include a small chorus and young performers. The Juniper Tree is anticipated to be a co-production originated by Chicago Opera Theater.
Requirements
Duties will include typical AD duties for a staged operatic production.
- Prior experience in opera
- Ability to read music
- Ability to work with a diverse group of artists and other professionals
- High standards, attention to detail, flexibility, and efficiency executed with kindness toward others
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment
- Experience working with chorus and/or young performers preferred

Compensation
Pending AGMA ratification, compensation is expected to reflect a 4% increase over the current AGMA weekly rate, for an anticipated weekly rate of $1,274.42
