Founded in 1995, About Face Theatre (AFT) exists to advance the national dialogue on sexual and gender identity in Chicago and beyond. We accomplish this through an annual union-affiliated production season, year-round education programs, and opportunities for new play development.

Job Summary

About Face Theatre is seeking to fill an important staff role that supports the company’s successful return to live programming, maintains a safe and caring working environment for artists and staff, and cultivates solid relations with rental partners and all visitors at the AFT office and rehearsal space in Edgewater.

About Face Theatre seeks candidates who bring a commitment to anti-racist practices and a lens of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility to all responsibilities. Formal theatre training is not required to be successful in this role. The essential skills are outlined below. This position is designed for 30 hours per week with hours that can include weekends and evenings. This position reports to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities

Operations Management

Oversee and manage office and rehearsal space sub-rentals including communication, booking, invoicing, and tracking.
Oversee and maintain the office and rehearsal spaces including policies related to safety and cleanliness.
Assist the Managing Director as needed in communication and relationships with vendors.
Assist the Managing Director as needed in day-to-day operations including support in donor management and financial systems.

Production Management

Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Managing Director on hiring and contracting artists throughout the programming season.
Oversee artists and independent contractors throughout production processes.
Schedule and facilitate production meetings.
Facilitate production processes from conception through production and strike.
Ensure clear and effective communication regarding contractual agreements, deadlines, budgets, and schedules.
Oversee and manage production budgets and expenses.
Represent the producing team at key points throughout production processes.
Support audience relations /customer service tasks as needed throughout the programming season including management of data and ticketing relationships with performance venues.
Other duties as required to ensure smooth production processes.

Candidate Qualifications and Skills

You have experience in strategic thinking, leading teams, and tracking budgets.
You have experience in organizing and implementing project and production schedules.
You are comfortable using a computer and moving between multiple systems and applications.
You have some knowledge of patron databases and are willing to learn new systems.
You have excellent listening, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
You have strong written and verbal communication skills.
You enjoy organizing, paying close attention to details, and managing deadlines for yourself and others.
You have a commitment to anti-racist practices and policies.
You have a passion for About Face Theatre’s mission.
All AFT staff members are required to have received the COVID-19 vaccine and agree to wearing a mask when interacting with AFT donors, artists, and the general public.

Work Hours, Compensation, Benefits

Full-time, salaried at $34,000

Hours: 30 hours per week

Schedule: Office hours are generally Monday – Friday, 10 am – 6 pm. This position will require some evenings and weekends to accommodate production schedules.

Includes access to About Face Theatre group health insurance plan.

Includes paid vacation and sick leave.
