Chicago's new home for new play development.

Avalanche Theatre is seeking a collaborative Director with experience in new work for a Fall 2026 world premiere production. The selected director will work closely with the playwright and Avalanche’s artistic team to guide the production from casting through rehearsals and performance. The script and title will be shared with finalists during the interview process.

About Avalanche Theatre:
Avalanche Theatre fosters the development of new plays by Chicago playwrights through workshops, readings, feedback sessions, and mentorship. Through the Next Draft Series, Avalanche has developed over 10 new scripts since 2023, which have gone on to further development and productions at companies like Goodman Theatre, A Red Orchid Theatre, Alleyway Theatre, Silk Road Cultural Center, and more.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the playwright and creative team to develop and realize the artistic vision of the production.
  • Lead casting, rehearsal, and staging processes in line with Avalanche’s values and aligned with the Chicago Not In Our House theatre standards.
  • Participate in pre-production planning and design meetings.
  • Support a process that is artist-centered, inclusive, and supportive of new play development.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience directing new plays or world premieres.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with developmental or workshop environments is a plus.

Stipend: $500
