Job Title: Managing Artistic Director
Organization: Buffalo Theatre Ensemble (BTE)
Location: Glen Ellyn, IL
Compensation: $30,000 – 35,000 annually, 30-40 hours per week (no benefits)

Position Overview:

Buffalo Theatre Ensemble (BTE), an Equity theatre company in residence at the McAnich Arts Center on the campus of the College of Dupage, is seeking a collaborative and visionary Managing Artistic Director to lead the theatre’s artistic and operational functions. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with a passion for theatre, a commitment to engagement with the community, and the ability to balance creative vision with financial and operational stewardship.

The Managing Artistic Director is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and programming of BTE in collaboration with the Ensemble, staff, and Board of Directors. They will also oversee production, administrative, financial, marketing, and educational functions, ensuring the overall success and growth of BTE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Artistic Leadership: Shape and lead the artistic vision and programming of BTE, including season selection and the hiring of artistic and production staff.
  • Financial Management: Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Business Manager, presenting financial updates and forecasts to the Board.
  • Production Oversight: Ensure smooth execution of all productions, attending production meetings, first rehearsals, and run-throughs. Act as a mentor and “second eye” to directors.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with COD, MAC, community organizations, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Strategic Planning: Lead annual strategic planning sessions and set measurable goals for the theatre’s growth, including ticket sales, subscriptions, and community outreach.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and support the Associate Artistic Director and Business Manager, providing mentorship and ensuring team members are equipped to succeed. Excellent collaboration and flexibility, working with various stakeholders, including an active Ensemble and Board of Directors. Lead the ensemble in growing and diversifying.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a leadership role within a professional theatre organization.
  • Strong understanding of theatre production, directing, and new play development.
  • Financial acumen, including experience with budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with artists, community partners, donors, and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience in strategic planning and organizational growth.
  • Knowledge of Actor’s Equity Association rules, United Scenic Artists and Society for Stage Directors and Choreographers agreements and practices, nonprofit laws, and fundraising best practices.

  • Excellent communication and diplomacy skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative, respectful environment.
  • Creative vision with a passion for storytelling and theatre arts.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Familiarity with marketing and social media strategies to grow audience engagement.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, G Suite (including Google Drive), Dropbox, HIPAA compliant servers, and Zoom. Also helpful software proficiencies would be Mail Chimp, Quickbooks, and Duda.
