CALL FOR DIRECTOR / CHOREOGRAPHER

Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble – For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf (2027)

CDE is seeking a visionary Director and/or Choreographer for our 2027 production of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf.

At CDE, we pride ourselves on producing multidisciplinary art projects. This production will incorporate a curated art exhibit and collaboration with visual artists to deepen the world of the piece. We’re looking for someone with a clear, grounded understanding of the script. Someone who has an openness to play, exploration, and reimagining- and is ready to elevate the work to include a broader, more expansive understanding of femininity that befits current social landscapes.

We strongly prefer to hire one person who can serve as both Director and Choreographer, but we are open to separating the roles for the right collaborators.

Time Commitment:

Bimonthy-production meetings
Three-month rehearsal process
October Auditions and Call Backs
November Rehearsals Start
2-3 rehearsals per week set with directors schedule in mind working with Executive Artistic Director and Assistant Artistic Director- We have a longer rehearsal process to accommodate working parents, days jobs and the creative and planning process.
Tech week Feb.21 12-6pm, Feb. 22 & 23- 6-10 pm, Feb. 24- 7pm press preview, Dark Feb. 25
Three-week run: February 26 – March 13, 2027

Compensation:

Director/choreographer $2,000
Director $1,500
Choreographer $500
Additionally, director shall be paid for pre-sale tickets up to $300 (or up to 10, $30 tickets or whatever may total $300)when the director name is selected at checkout.
