Chicago Opera Theatre (COT) seeks an experienced Lighting Supervisor for two productions in

our 2026/27 season:

 

The Importance of Being Earnest

Lighting Pre-Production Begins: October 20, 2026

Rehearsals Begin: November 2, 2026

Performances: December 2, 5, & 6, 2026

 

The Juniper Tree

Lighting Pre-Production Begins: April 10, 2027

Rehearsals Begin: April 19, 2027

Performances: May 19, 22, & 23, 2027

Both productions will be presented at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

 

Position Overview

The Lighting Supervisor will work closely with the Production Manager, Lighting Designers, venue staff, and production crews to implement and maintain each production’s lighting design.

This position oversees lighting preparation, installation, focus, technical rehearsals, performances, and strike.

 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with designers and Production Manager to determine equipment and rental needs
  • Coordinate lighting rentals, deliveries, and returns
  • Serve as the primary liaison with venue electrics staff
  • Oversee wiring and integration of scenic and prop practicals
  • Supervise lighting hang, focus, cueing, notes sessions, and strike
  • Attend production meetings and technical rehearsals
  • Respond to rehearsal and production notes as needed
  • Ensure safe and efficient execution of all lighting operations
  • Maintain clear communication regarding schedules, budgets, and production needs

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Professional experience as a Lighting Supervisor, Head Electrician, Master Electrician, or equivalent
  • Experience working in opera, theater, dance, or live performance
  • Strong understanding of theatrical lighting systems and electrical distribution
  • Experience coordinating rental equipment and venue resources
  • Ability to lead crews and work collaboratively with artistic and production teams
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Compensation

$5,000 per production

$10,000 total compensation for both productions

Position is structured as an independent contractor engagement
