Overview

About Free Street

For 50 years, Free Street Theater has used theater and public performance as a tool to defy Chicago’s racial and economic segregation, putting it at the forefront of the movement to create affordable, inclusive, and innovative theater in communities across Chicago. We do this by making work by,for, about, with, and in Chicago’s diverse communities. We believe that theater matters, and if it matters, we should find ways to make it accessible and inviting to as many people as possible in both the process and performance.

The Opportunity

Over the past six years, Free Street has experienced tremendous growth. In addition to our wide-ranging outdoor performances in Chicago, we operate two permanent performance and gathering spaces: HQ at the Pulaski Park fieldhouse (1419 W. Blackhawk) and Storyfront at 4346 S. Ashland. Free Street produces an average of six original productions each year, hosts two youth and two multi-generational ensembles, and provides training in theater techniques to people of all ages. Free Street has reached a point in its current development where it needs an Executive Director to manage its growth in a sustainable way.
