POSITION SUMMARY:

The General Management Apprentice is a salaried, year-long, holistic immersion into the workings of Chicago’s largest not-for-profit producing theater. The Apprentice gains hands-on management experience, working with the Executive Director, Managing Director, Associate Managing Director and Company Manager in all aspects of theatrical general management, including contract negotiation, labor relations, budget management, company management, and various institutional responsibilities.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s Degree, has completed an internship at a professional theater company (in any area) and has knowledge of theater administration and awareness of industry practices. Excellent communication, organizational and multitasking skills are a must!

AREAS OF EXPOSURE: 

  • Work with the Managing Director and Associate Managing Director on budgeting and fiscal responsibilities of the organization.
  • Experience the process of negotiating and contracting with artistic personnel while learning the details of artistic and production labor contracts.
  • Secure rights and negotiate creative licensing agreements.
  • Collaborate on the negotiation process for visiting theater company initiatives, co-productions, transfers and tours of Goodman productions.
  • Work with the Goodman Artistic Staff regarding season planning, producing and casting of season productions.
  • Work with the Goodman’s Company Manager to gain an understanding of the role and its responsibilities and assist in support of Goodman companies and artists.

APPRENTICESHIP GOALS:
Through training, observation and increasing responsibilities, become an integral member of the Goodman general management team. By the end of the one-year apprenticeship, the candidate will have obtained valuable knowledge, skills and experience in non-profit theatrical general management.
