Reports to:         Communications Director


Goodman Theatre’s Communications team is responsible for the earned media efforts (press/publicity) and select owned media tactics (visuals, video, Playbill) to promote the theater’s productions and programs, and advance the Goodman as a not-for-profit theater arts and community organization. Areas of oversight include message development, media relations, content generation and information distribution to support ticket sales and the Goodman Theatre’s mission. This team collaborates with theater leadership and all departments across the organization.

The Publicity Coordinator reports to the Communications Director, with whom the Coordinator assists in the messaging, planning and execution of all aspects of publicity campaigns and public information programs. In addition, the Coordinator serves as a contributing editor and production manager for the Goodman’s Playbill program.

Goodman Theatre produces a five-play season in the 856-seat Albert Ivar Goodman Theatre and a three-play season in the 350-seat Owen Bruner Goodman Theatre. In addition, the Goodman produces two holiday productions—A Christmas Carol and The Santaland Diaries—the annual New Stages Festival, plus a variety of special events and education and engagement programs.


·         Work with Communications Director to develop/implement/evaluate opportunistic press plans for productions/events

·         Serve as an editor and project manager for Playbill—including editorial planning, calendar/deadline management, artist bio procurement and editing, routing, work with Design

·         Write press releases

·         Assist with planning, logistics and internal communication for publicity opportunities

·         Research media opportunities/contacts and maintain press lists using Tessitura and CisionPoint

·         Assemble and update background pitch materials for each production/event

·         Create and maintain the Publicity Calendar, keeping current with deadlines and reminders

·         Assist with the scheduling, facilitation, and distribution of photo and video assets

·         Coordinate opening night prep—including attendance lists, numbers updates, seating, greeting press at event

·         Co-Mentor department intern(s)

·         Work with Intern to maintain the “Press Room” pages on GoodmanTheatre.org

·         Archival duties, including distribution of materials to other theaters, producers, journalists, scholars and students

·         Assist with departmental administrative responsibilities as needed


Experience:                 Candidates must have at least two years of experience in communications, media/public relations—ideally for a theater. Established relationships with members of the Chicago and national media a plus.

Education:                   Bachelor’s Degree in theater, journalism, communications, English or related field.

Required Skills:          Must be a strong writer, self-starter, self-motivated, highly organized and able to work well with artists and staff within all disciplines and levels within the theater. Must have excellent editing and interpersonal skills. Experience with Tessitura a plus. Must have a self-motivated work style.
