Reports to: Lighting Director
Status: Full-time, Seasonal (approximately July 2019 – June 2020), Exempt

Lyric Opera of Chicago exists to provide a broad, deep and relevant cultural service to the Chicago region and the nation, and to advance the development of the art form of opera.

We are searching for an Assistant Lighting Designer to work in the development of all lighting design aspects of Lyric Opera productions.

• Assist Guest Lighting Designers on productions as assigned
• Assist with creation and maintenance of lighting plots, ground plans and deck drawings
• Work with other technical department staff to solve lighting and rigging problems
• Research production specific equipment and products
• Assist with lighting focus for daily change-over from one production to another
• Watch performances to maintain artistic integrity of the lighting design
• Coach follow spot cues during rehearsals and performances
• Other duties as assigned for productions and programming outside of Opera and Musical

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Minimum 1-3 years of experience in the field
• Opera production knowledge
• Modern stage lighting technology familiarity
• Familiarity with d3 Media Servers and projection equipment
• Office practices and procedures including efficient record keeping is a must
• Microsoft Office, Vectorworks and AutoCAD
• Working with and supervising union crews and with intelligent light programming (Vari-lites, etc.)
• Work independently with minimal supervision and meet due dates and deadlines
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Maintain confidentiality
• Organize, prioritize and complete varied tasks quickly and accurately
• Establish effective working relationships and interact with a wide range of people
• Maintain several projects of equal priority at once and sustain productivity under pressure
• Intercom system (headset and microphone) experience required

• Sit at a computer and/or production desk for up to and over eight hours per day.
• See clearly in low-light situations such as are common back stage and in the theatre.
• Stand for a long duration during the focusing of lighting instruments.
• Walk on complex stage settings to accomplish the focusing of lighting instruments.
• The employee must be able to perform the functions of the position in a safe manner.
• Ability to occasionally oversee evening or weekend functions, deployments or performances.
• The work week shall be essentially 6 days, 50 hours per week although it is understood that there must be some flexibility in scheduling of hours and that occasionally 7-day weeks may be necessary. Work weekends and evenings as necessary.
