REPORTS TO: Vice President for Principal Gifts

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

Lyric Opera of Chicago exists to provide a broad, deep and relevant cultural service to the Chicago region and the nation, and to advance the development of the art form of opera.

This full-time position is responsible for supporting Lyric Opera of Chicago in achieving its short- and long-term development goals with the writing and editing of fundraising proposals, briefings, and stewardship pieces. Under the direction of the Vice President for Principal Gifts, the Associate Director helps ensure that compelling and productive solicitation and stewardship materials are prepared for donors and prospects at the $1M and above level.


  • Write, edit, or proofread proposals and correspondence as assigned by members of the Principal Gifts team or Chief Development Officer in support of the Principal Gifts team, senior leadership, and volunteers.
  • Prepare briefings for Principal Gifts, Chief Development Officer, senior leadership, and volunteers to ensure productive outcomes of donor meetings.  Work with Research to incorporate Individual Full Profiles along with strategic talking points, gift/solicitation strategies, and other donor-specific information into a final document to be used by staff and volunteers for donor meetings.
  • Execute the written stewardship program (including annual Endowed Fund Reports) at the Principal Gifts ($1M+) giving level. Partner with senior management to create and implement individually-tailored stewardship plans for top families and donors.
  • Work with colleagues in Annual Giving, Marketing, Research, and Donor Relations to synthesize information on donors and prospects and to ensure consistent messaging regarding funding opportunities, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Maintain good work habits including dependability, adherence to Lyric workplace policies, preparedness for meetings and events, and responsive follow-through on all donor, supervisor, and staff requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Three to five years minimum experience that includes writing or copyediting for senior leadership or external audiences.  Experience in development, marketing, communications, or the equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, business, marketing, or equivalent or two years’ experience in development function.
  • Analytical thinking, complex problem solving, and planning; ability to work in fast-paced environment; comfortable with change and associated ambiguity, writing and editing experience; detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with desktop computing applications, internet research capabilities, and fundraising software tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills with ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.


  • Ability and flexibility to oversee evening or weekend functions, deployments, or performances.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, to handle other office equipment.
