The Bar Manager for Lyric Opera of Chicago is directly responsible for managing the bar service throughout the Opera House. Their purpose is to provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service to patrons and subscribers of Lyric.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee, train and counsel all bartenders, barbacks, coat check and porters.
- Ensure day-to-day efficiency of service operations at all concession stations.
- Prepare daily sheets for concession bar.
- Check daily sheets on Revel for inventory control.
- Set all bar carts so that their daily sheets are up to par.
- Ensure the storage room and walk-in cooler is organized and clean.
- Ensure all banks are handed in and put in the safe at the end of night.
- Count in sales with Director of Facility Operations and make the drop.
- Put all tablets and swipes back in place and charge after each performance.
- Review and approve part-time/seasonal staff’s timecards (including bartenders, barbacks and coat check) on a timely basis to ensure adherence to budget.
- Determine staffing complement and schedule the appropriate number of employees for each opera/non-opera performance; organize/deliver staff training, track attendance and issue necessary performance or attendance-based reprimands; provide input on retention/rehire of individual personnel for future assignments.
- Determine vendor list pursuant to price, quality, and service considerations; track inventory and contact vendors on an as-needed basis to order food, beverages, and supplies; receive, check (quantity and quality), and store stock in an efficient and controlled manner.
- Reconcile revenues with inventories and sales of all bars and coffee stations and prepare regular ad-hoc reports for review by Management and Finance.
- Track each bartender/concessionaire sales throughout Lyric Opera season to ensure proper cash handling and reconciliation.
- Reconcile private event revenues (ex: Joffrey) with inventories and sales by location; prepare daily/monthly reports for review by Management and Finance.
- Throughout the Lyric Opera season, track sales of bar/concession products to achieve revenue goals. If necessary, alter the sales mix to achieve optimal sales potential.
- Schedule, prepare, and coordinate beverage service for special events and rentals as needed.
- Maintain high standards of food and beverage quality and guest service quality.
- Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
- Always maintain a warm and friendly demeanor.
- Maintain sanitary conditions in all bars, barback, inventory, and service areas.
- Bartend in the case of an emergency.
- These duties may change as Lyric’s leadership identifies the need at any time.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Must have a Bassett Card and at least 3 years Bartending experience required.
- At least 3 years of management experience is required.
- Previous experience working in a theater environment is required.
- Candidates must have excellent customer service experience.
- Must have previous experience handling cash and will be trained on the Revel system.
- Must be punctual and responsible.
- Must be available to work all of the matinee & evening performances.
WORK CONDITIONS:
- Ability to operate a computer and to manage other office equipment.
- Ability to climb stairs, work in dark places, lift and carry items < 15 lbs.
COMPENSATION:
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Seasonal
Hourly Rate is $40
