Mudlark Theater is a not-for-profit organization where children are taken seriously as artists, and learn theater by making it. As a rule, the general public expects little of children in theater. Mudlark’s goal is to raise that expectation and keep it there. By holding children to a higher standard and empowering them to make strong artistic choices, we create the possibility for great theater—vibrant, funny, compelling shows that erase the boundary between youth and professional theater.

We are looking for experienced directors to work with Mudlark on our Studio shows for the 2019-2020 season. Through new works and original adaptations, we produce plays where the experiences of young people are central. We are looking for directors who are interested in collaborating on new works with a dedicated playwright, or who are interested in writing/devising their own work with the youth actors. Each show has a cast of  20-22 youth actors for a 60 minute production.

Ideal candidates will have a background in the performance aspect of theater (acting, improv, directing, dance, music, fight choreography, etc.) and/or a background in teaching theater to young adults ages 10-14. We are looking for artists who are reliable, creative, and good collaborators. Applicants should also demonstrate a strong work ethic, great interpersonal communication skills and an interest in working with youth.

Our rehearsals blend fun and work. A typical rehearsal starts and ends with warm ups and games that both build actor skills and ensemble. We value both the social and artistic experience of theater-making. Our approach to directing youth actors is heavily in-the-room focused; we find the most effective way for their characters and ultimately the play to take shape is through immediate feedback, repetition, and side coaching from our directors. This generally leads to a higher level of engagement from directors in the room than many adult-only productions.

Rehearsal Schedules: Shows rehearse either T/Th/Sat or M/W/F. Weekday rehearsals typically run between 4:30-6:30pm and Saturday rehearsals take place during the 10am-2pm window, for 2-3 hours.

Tech: Tech dates are the Saturday and Sunday before show opening for 4-5 hours (12-5pm) each day, plus weekday dress rehearsals from 5:30-8:45pm.

Performances: Studio productions run for one weekend (4-5 performances) in our Red Curtain Theater at Mudlark HQ, 1417 Hinman Ave, Evanston. Directors are required to be at all performances to run notes/work with actors.

Hours: 7-10 hours per week, with hours increasing during tech and performances.

Stipend: This is a paid position. TBD based on project specifics.
