ABOUT MUDLARK

Mudlark Theater is a not-for-profit organization where children are taken seriously as artists, and learn theater by making it. As a rule, the general public expects little of children in theater. Mudlark’s goal is to raise that expectation and keep it there. By holding children to a higher standard and empowering them to make strong artistic choices, we create the possibility for great theater—vibrant, funny, compelling shows that erase the boundary between youth and professional theater.

CALL FOR PLAY PROPOSALS

We are looking for experienced playwrights to work with Mudlark on our Studio shows for the 2019-2020 season. Through new works and original adaptations, we produce plays where the experiences of young people are central.

Mudlark’s mission is to make good plays with young actors. What do we mean by a good play? We want to produce plays that are genuinely engaging to audiences and that are carefully crafted with young actors in mind. We take a professional approach to the work that we do with youth, and care as much about the quality of our scripts and final performances as any professional theater would. We are interested in stories where actors are playing roles appropriate to their age or abstract or fantastical plays where the ages of the characters don’t matter (i.e. they are timeless characters, animals, magical creatures, etc.).

We are interested in collaborators. At Mudlark, there is an all hands on deck, community approach to making theater. Our Artistic team will work closely with playwrights and directors on the script and show process to provide support, suggestions, and feedback. Our Artistic team knows the young actors and our space well and work to support the artistic direction of the shows while continuing the development of the actors’ skills. We also highly encourage playwrights to attend rehearsals in order to more closely collaborate with the actors and directors and ensure that their work is serving the youth actors’ talents and abilities.

What we are looking for:

– Plays written for young actors ages 10-14 with no more than 1 adult role.
– Can accommodate at least 20-22 actors with speaking parts.
– No longer than 60 minutes.
– Original unproduced scripts (preferably not adaptations of stories we have already done recently, see our full production history).

What we need from you:

– Contact Phone Number
– Writing Sample (up to 10 pages and no more)
– Relevant resume (e.g. history of productions, teaching, directing, etc.)
– A summary of your proposal (if the play has not yet been written) OR a draft of the piece you’d like for us to consider.
