Overview

Northlight Theatre in Skokie, IL seeks a full-time Director of Education and Community Engagement. This position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for establishing the mission and curriculum of the Education department in consultation with Artistic and Executive leadership. The Director of Education and Community Engagement supervises all of the education programs including Season Access, Northlight On Campus, Speak Up!, Master Class, Youth Council, and Community Partnerships as well as hiring and supervising all Education staff. In addition to coordinating these programs to ensure that they are enhancing and supplementing the Northlight season and mission, the position serves on Audience Engagement Committee and co-chairs EDI Task Force.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·         Oversee Education & Community Engagement programming in accordance with Northlight mission, including Season Access, Northlight On Campus, Speak Up!, Master Class, Youth Council and Community Engagement.

·         Hire and manage the Education Manager and aid in hiring teaching artists.

·         Recruit and maintain relationships with schools, teachers, and community organizations. Plan events to strengthen community partnerships including luncheons, round-tables, etc.

·         Meet with community organizers to gauge the needs of the community and explore branches of Northlight programming that fill the gaps with Director of Advancement.

·         Oversee and set curriculum for all school-year & community engagement programs .

·         Handle contracting and invoicing schools and payroll for all education and community engagement programs.

·         Develop and administer evaluation and assessment for all education programs including student surveys, teaching artist and apprentice observation forms, video and photo documentation of programs, and analysis of program quality and effectiveness.

·         Oversee the Northlight Youth Council and aid in planning youth Spotlight events, outings, and charitable activities. Coordinate guest artist visits. Provide mentorship.

·         Oversee the Internship program and assist department heads in the selection & management of interns, as well as working with the Artistic Programs Manager on the administration of the program.

·         Assist Advancement in preparing and reporting out on grant applications and education sponsorships

·         Present to Board of Directors at each regularly scheduled meeting

·         Work with Marketing to create all Education marketing materials and develop marketing strategies to brand Education programs and recruit schools and youth and community programs.

·         Work with building management to coordinate all on-site education events.

·         Work with the Director of Finance to ensure programs stay within approved budgets.

·         Provide annual budget and monthly projection information for education department.

·         Teach Northlight classes as appropriate. Advocate for education programs to Northlight’s Board of Directors and Staff, the North Shore community, Foundations, etc.

·         Oversee the Northlight Board Education Committee and Community Engagement Committee, and recruit members, set calendar, and hold meetings.

·         Serve as the co-chair of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee and administer the EDI initiatives as approved by Executive leadership

·         Oversee planning and implementation of all accessibility programs

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in theatre, arts education, or related field or equivalent experience. At least 5 years’ experience as a teaching artist, theatre teacher, and/or arts administrator. Ability and enthusiasm to work with youth, school teachers and administrators, community partners, and communicate with parents. Extensive knowledge of arts education practices and trends. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail needed. Budgeting and supervisory skills required, as well as the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. Must own and be licensed to drive a car.

Compensation: Compensation range is $44,000 to $48,000, competitive with prevailing compensation for similar positions within the non-profit performing arts industry, and commensurate with qualifications and experience of the applicant.   This position is eligible for benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance and paid time off.
