This is a list of job expectations for the “Associate Producer” position with Pocket Theatrics, specializing in Freshly Brewed programming with The Understudy.
Pocket Theatrics’s goal is to hire one associate producer per program. Associate Producers will have a foundational knowledge of producing, with a specialization in their specific program.
Each program has its own unique timeline. Each time estimate given is assuming the program is active, not a consistent weekly expectation.
All responsibilities, compensation, and expectations listed have been, performed by current Freshly Brewed. producers. We are working with you throughout this process and will have monthly/weekly check ins to project manage our producing body.
Each program has its own cadence; there will be periods where a program is not active for several months and and then there are busier periods that will require the time commitment outlined below in the responsibilities description. Each time estimate given is assuming the program is active; it is not a consistent weekly expectation.
An example of a Freshly Brewed producing timeline:
- Initial meeting with Playwright and Director 2 months before reading. (2 hours)
- Confirm cast (4 hours)
- 2 3 and ½ hour rehearsals before performance (time of rehearsal confirmed in the initial meeting).
- Performance at The Understudy (always on a monday, 3 hours including set up and take down)
14 hours of work over 2 months if lead producer.

Compensation is $100 per project produced and 1 free drink card per script read and evaluated. Additionally, we will help with any professional development opportunities (updated headshots, website/artistic statement review, etc).
This position requires the ability to do thoughtful script evaluation, run a rehearsal room, navigate disagreements/conflict should it arise, and lead a producing process. This also includes being a clear communicator, good time management skills, and feeling comfortable in a leadership position. On average, this role requires a time commitment of 75 hrs a year. We recognize that conflicting schedules and other responsibilities may come up and we will work with the Associate Producer’s schedule and capacity to ensure both our needs and theirs are being met.
Responsibilities:
- Associate Produce at least 2 readings per season (12hrs each)
- Finish all of your script evaluations on time
- Assist with the reading committee (6-10hrs)
- Communicate any missed rehearsal or changed availability at least 1 week in advance.
- Help set up and take down for the performance date.
- Attend at least 1 rehearsal
- Read the play
- Send out daily calls for rehearsal and performance dates.
- Make sure we have payment information for the director, actor, dramaturg, and playwright.
- If unable, communicate your availability when you are assigned scripts.
Coming up in the summer, Pocket has a full company meeting August 7-9th for strategic planning and onboarding all new associate producers. More information of where and agenda will be shared during the interview process.
