Stage Left Theatre is seeking a Lighting Designer for its upcoming production of the original new work THE DISTRIKT OF LAKE MICHIGUN. The play will be performed in a converted retail space in the Water Tower Place mall. Because the space is unconventional, there will not be a traditional lighting grid or setup, so the ideal candidate will have experience working with non-traditional spaces and rented equipment. The production will open March 6, 2025, with tech the week of February 23, so we are intending to fill the position as quickly as possible. There is also the possibility of overhire as needed for installation, focus, etc.
The play: Shortly after the Great Fire, “Captain” George Streeter and his wife Ma are building a utopian community on a sandbar in Lake Michigan right outside the city limits of Chicago. Unfortunately, his ex-wife Minnie is tagging along to set the record straight. Combining elements of Greek tragedy, vaudeville, farce, history play, and Brechtian lehrstucke, this is the outrageous (mostly) true story of how Chicago’s most expensive neighborhood came into existence.
