Strawdog Theatre Company Seeks Managing Director

The Managing Director oversees the business functions of Strawdog Theatre Company including Finance, Development, Marketing, Production Budgets, Facilities, Front of House (FOH), and Rentals.

The MD will work with the Artistic Director to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all staff, artists, and patrons. Alongside the Artistic Director, the MD will build on and strengthen the organizational culture of accountability, financial responsibility, and collaboration amongst staff, ensemble and board.

The Front of House/Facilities Manager reports to the Managing Director. The Production Manager reports to both the Managing and Artistic Directors.

This position reports to the Board of Directors, and works alongside the Artistic Director. The MD serves as an ex-officio Board Member.

Financial Management

Manage day to day finances using Quickbooks Online, and provide guidance to the board and ensemble related to long-term budgeting and financial planning
Lead the creation of the annual budget, working with the Artistic Director, Production Manager, and Board Treasurer
Manage all accounts receivables/payables
Provide monthly financial reporting to the Board of Directors
Meet and communicate regularly with Board Treasurer regarding financial planning and cash flow
Select vendors and adhere to bidding process to ensure best value
Conduct benchmarking exercises for rental rates, ticket pricing, salaries, and stipends to provide information to the board for budgeting and to maintain competitive rates
Develop season ticket pricing model, including subscriptions
Work with Production Manager to ensure adherence to production budgets

Development & Audience Engagement

Cultivate and steward relationships with Strawdog’s Producers Circle and Directors Circle patrons
Create and implement an annual fund plan
Timely acknowledge donors and maintain strong lines of communication
Pursue in-kind sponsorships and connections with our Northcenter community
Work closely with the Special Events Taskforce to plan one major annual fundraiser each season (or multiple small events – to be determined with Special Events Taskforce)
Research and pursue new grant opportunities
Write grants and manage grant submission process with the support of the Artistic Director and Executive Committee of the board
Develop and execute new audience engagement strategies


Develop and execute an institutional marketing strategy
Plan and execute marketing campaigns for all productions, in consultation with the Artistic Director
Work with public relations firm to promote all productions
Manage communications calendar
Oversee design of marketing materials
Order marketing materials such as posters/postcards
Manage ensemble volunteer(s) for social media marketing strategy
Utilize resources available such as the League of Chicago Theatres to inform strategy and achieve best marketing value


Manage box office operations: create shows in Vendini, create and manage discount offers, manage single tickets, group sales, and subscriptions
Oversee FOH/Facilities Manager who will hire and train FOH staff positions
Work with FOH/Facilities Manager to establish FOH procedures on a show-by-show basis, including rental company performances
Work with FOH/Facilities Manager to plan and execute special events during productions, including, but not limited to: board night, opening night, board recruitment events


Establish ongoing and regular communication with Production Manager regarding contracting and budget management before and during production
In partnership with Artistic Director represent Strawdog Management at major production events (board night, opening night, first rehearsal, etc).
Work with Artistic Director on personnel-related issues


Market and solicit rental opportunities for space and equipment
Act as first point of contact for parties interested in renting from Strawdog
Manage contracts and compliance matters with rentals
Once contracted, Production Manager will act as the point of contact for all rental clients

Experience in a not-for-profit organization, particularly an arts organization, strongly preferred
Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and/or Google Suite


The Strawdog Managing Director position is full time flexible, compensated with an annual salary of $25,000. The Managing Director is a W2 salaried employee.
