Do you enjoy teaching and would like to join Chicago’s largest dance organization to inspire students across the city? Joffrey Community Engagement is looking for teaching artists to engage students in dance and creativity at school as they develop lifelong learning skills.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The mission of Joffrey Community Engagement is to provide Chicago’s youth equitable access to high quality arts learning and dance education opportunities. Such opportunities support physical, social, and emotional development, to improve educational, community, and wellness outcomes.

JOFFREY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TEACHING ARTIST

The Joffrey Community Engagement Teaching Artist (TA) is an independent contractor who teaches exceptional arts education classes for Chicago Public Schools through in-school programming. We are looking for TAs who are adaptable, demonstrate knowledge and preparedness, care about all students, and create a joyful atmosphere. TAs provide instruction in multiple styles of dance including African, ballet, hip hop, jazz, and Latin. TAs offer highly structured dance experiences, encouraging students to develop technique, creativity, and life skills. Programs often last the full school year, though shorter residencies occur. Programs offered throughout the city require no previous dance training from students and are offered for grades PreK-12. TA responsibilities include:

  • Planning and providing class material culturally relevant and appropriate for the age level
  • Traveling and arriving on time to various Chicago Public Schools for instruction before, during, or after school
  • Facilitating student development of lifelong learning skills including self-discipline and confidence
  • Supporting students by creating a safe, student-centered environment
  • Utilizing critical thinking and problem solving to engage students, schools, families, and communities
  • Teaching in school spaces without traditional dance studios such as gymnasiums, auditoriums, and classrooms
  • Bringing a portable speaker to play music for class
  • Choreographing dances for students to perform in school assemblies
  • Maintaining constant and clear communication with the school coordinator and the Joffrey, through email, text, or phone
  • Completing biweekly timesheets and paperwork for contracted classes
  • Staying informed of best practices for classroom management and arts education

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma is required. Additionally, professional dance experience, undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience is required
  • Cleared fingerprinting and background checks from Joffrey are required to prevent child abuse
  • Experience teaching and choreographing dances that engage and challenge students PreK-12
  • Has strong communication and time-management skills and high emotional intelligence
  • Can effectively teach and address learning needs across gender, age, race, ability, socio-economic and cultural diversity
  • Ability to command a room and engage students, while modeling ideal behavior
  • Embodies exemplary professional conduct and respect for school and community culture
  • Demonstrates expertise in dance technique that adheres to state and local standards
  • Ability to demonstrate full body dance movement for each class, which typically lasts one hour
  • Thinks creatively to problem solve and adapt in a fast-paced environment
  • Consistently assesses student learning and self-reflects on personal contribution to program effectiveness
  • Regularly explores skill development to grow as an artist and is open to feedback
  • Shares a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access
