Website Tin Drum Theatre Company

Tin Drum Theatre Company is seeking a Scenic Designer who can also serve as Master Carpenter for the Chicago premiere of Southern Rapture by Eric Coble, at Theater Wit (Stage 2).

About the Show
Southern Rapture is a razor‑sharp satire inspired by the real 1996 furor around a production of Angels in America. When a theatre announces the drama featuring seven seconds of male nudity, the community combusts—politicians posture, activists mobilize, artists proclaim martyrdom, and media hysteria fills the air. Seven actors portray twenty characters across multiple locations with quick transitions and simple projection elements, making scenic design elements central to storytelling.

Responsibilities

  • Design & Build: Collaborate with the director and production team to conceive and realize a scenic design that supports multiple playing spaces and comedic pacing.
  • Master Carpenter Duties: Take charge of the scenic build, including planning materials, scheduling and logistics, and leading the installation and strike. Build, install, maintain, and strike scenic elements with support from other members of the production team.
  • Process & Collaboration: Attend pre‑production design meetings (dates TBD) and weekly check‑ins as needed; ability to coordinate and give instructions to others when assistance is necessary.

Qualifications

  • Experience designing and building scenery for storefront theatres; familiarity with Theater Wit is a plus but not required.
  • Strong planning and logistical skills, with the ability to organize build timelines and advise when additional help will be needed with load-in and build.
  • Proactive in budgeting and sourcing cost‑effective materials through careful and creative pre‑planning.
  • Responsible for ensuring safety and coordinating all build and strike activities.
  • Skilled in constructing sturdy, freestanding walls with doors on a tight budget.
  • Responsive, communicative collaborator.
  • Comfortable and confident working safely with power tools and instructing others in their use.
  • Able to provide a personal set of basic tools; company tools are also available and will be shared.

Schedule

  • Load‑In/Build: Monday, June 1 – Friday, June 5
  • Tech & Dress: Saturday, June 6 – Wednesday, June 10
  • Preview: Thursday, June 11
  • Opening: Friday, June 12
  • Run: June 13 – June 28
  • Strike: Sunday, June 28
