Overview

Full time, non-tenure track, one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The Theatre school seeks a candidate who can bring a critical perspective on multiracial identities to teaching courses such as dramaturgy, theatre history, dramatic literature, and theory/criticism as well as in courses that draw on their particular artistic or research expertise. We seek a candidate whose pedagogy reflects contemporary theory and scholarship regarding race, ethnicity, diaspora, or indigeneity, including how it intersects with gender, sexuality, disability, global and/or class considerations. Exact workload will be negotiated with the Dean based on candidate’s area(s) of expertise, interests and needs of the school.

Qualifications: University level teaching required. Terminal degree and professional theatre experience preferred. Candidate should exhibit a strong desire to engage students, faculty and staff in a conservatory setting. Within the personal statement and/or the statement of teaching philosophy please provide (1) specific evidence of a demonstrated commitment to multiculturalism and diversity in creative and/or academic work and (2) relevant areas of expertise in the field of Theatre Studies. The ideal candidate will help foster a more inclusive community that can impact classes, productions, and workshops across disciplines within a professional theatre training conservatory. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Long recognized as one of America’s top training institutions, The Theatre School was founded as The Goodman School of Drama in 1925 and is deeply rooted in Chicago’s traditions of ensemble, physicality and play. The Theatre Studies department includes BFA students in playwriting, theater management, dramaturgy, directing, comedy arts, education and engagement, and multidisciplinary practice.
Our faculty is made up of artists who are actively shaping the profession in Chicago’s world class theatre community, nationally and internationally. Graduates go on to lead the profession on stage and screen. Production is an integral part of the training and aims to serve Chicago’s dynamic community through new and established works for the stage. Recent productions include alum Nambi Kelly’s adaptation of Native Son, alum Tarrell McCraney’s Wig Out!, Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters, Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Water by the Spoonful and Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 3.

The Theatre School, located on the university’s Lincoln Park campus, enrolls 395 students in 12 undergraduate and 3 graduate programs. Our faculty (27 Full time and 74 part time) includes leading Chicago theatre artists across all disciplines.
